Beyond abstinence At Foundation for Change, we take a power-informed approach to recovery. This means looking at how intersecting structures - sex, gender, class, poverty, race - have profoundly shaped both how we experience the world and how we understand ourselves. We create space for conversations about racism, misogyny, and discrimination, because ignoring them only reinforces the very systems that harm us. These discussions can be difficult, but they are necessary if we want to move beyond surface-level change. We see no opinion as ‘wrong’, and emphasise the psychological principle that “everything comes from somewhere”. We encourage people to critique their inner dialogues, from a place of curiosity and compassion. To listen to others. To be open to changing beliefs as a result of hearing new perspectives. To open up the frame. In the current political climate, it feels more urgent than ever to stop, listen, and think critically. Without doing so, we risk repeating the same cycles. With, however, we open the possibility of real transformation, real change—for ourselves and for society.
